    Published: Dec 27, 2022 by Rachna Β·

Jump to Recipe - Print Recipe

This is a great breakfast recipe for the family. I love these quick and easy to make eggs in a basket in air fryer.

I have also come across other names like air fryer egg toast, toads in a hole, breakfast in a hole or air fryer eggs in a hole. No matter what you may call it, this is a real favourite.

Needing mainly bread and whole eggs, I make these regularly while I do other things. Best part it you can quickly make these for your kids.

Eggs turn out fantastic in the air fryer. From egg bites to poached eggs and boiled eggs in air fryer to Β air fryer omelette, everything is done to perfection and with lesser mess in the air fryer.

If you enjoy eggs, you will love these recipes.

What are Eggs in a Hole?

Eggs in a hole is a simple recipe where a slice of bread it taken and using an upside down glass or a cookie cutter, the centre is removed.

Then an egg is broken into that hole, and it is then air fried.

You can do the egg soft runny to well cooked as per your choice. Top with salt and pepper and enjoy.

I make these eggs in a basket with a little variation. I press down with the glass so that the bread slice in the centre is a bit depression.

Then I break the egg in this cavity and air fry this egg toast. Easy peasy and no bread is harmed. πŸ™‚

    Ingredients

Bread: I generally use wholewheat bread or multigrain bread slices. This recipe works with any bread that you have at hand.

Eggs: Use whole eggs preferably at room temperature. If you are using eggs straight from the fridge, your air frying time may increase slightly.

Butter: If you like butter, you can use it on your bread slices. I have skipped it.

Salt and pepper: This is the seasoning that you need. Your eggs in a basket taste perfect with these.

Optional seasoning: Cheese, chilli flakes, Italian seasoning, chopped parsley or chives all work as excellent garnishes if your heart may desire them.

    Variations

This is a vegetarian recipe as eggs are used.

If you eat meat, you can add some finely chopped bacon or even onions and egg as toppings to this recipe.

    FAQs

    1. Can you use aluminium foil in the air fryer for making eggs in a basket?

Yes, you can. I, however, prefer to use parchment paper sheet instead of aluminium foil.

    2. Can you put raw eggs in the air fryer?

Air fryer is wonderful for cooking raw eggs. Omelette, boiled eggs, poached eggs, egg bites all turn out wonderful in the air fryer.

    Instructions

I will show you two ways of making this recipe:

Making a cavity in the bread slice

Take a slice of bread. You may apply butter on it (optional). Take a glass. Flip it and use its mouth to cut out a cavity in the bread.

Save the bread cut out and air fry it to serve along.

A bread slice with a hole cut out using a glass along with another whole bread.

Using a parchment paper sheet, cut it to a square.

Place bread slice from which a cavity is removed on top of this parchment paper inside an air fryer basket.

Air fryer basket with parchment paper and a bread with a hole cut out on it.

Now carefully break an egg into the cavity. Top with salt and pepper.

Bread with cavity cut out and with a broken egg with salt and pepper in air fryer basket.

Without preheating the air fryer, place the air fryer basket inside the air fryer.

Air fry at 360F or 180C for about 7-9 minutes till your egg is cooked and the bread is toasted.

At 7 minutes, the yolk was very runny and at 9 minutes, it was cooked. This time may vary depending the type of air fryer you use.

Egg toast on parchment paper in air fryer basket.

So when you are making it for the first time, do keep an eye on the egg after 5 minutes of air frying time.

Take it out. Using a spatula take out the egg in a hole and serve on a plate. Garnish with your ingredients of choice. Enjoy.

Egg toast on a white plate.

Please note that for the next bread slice, since the air fryer is already hot, you will require a minute or two less of air frying time.

Without cutting out a cavity in bread

Using the bottom of a glass, lightly press the centre of a bread slice to form a slight depression or cavity in the bread.

One slice of bread pressed down with glass in the centre to form a cavity.

Preheat air fryer at 360F or 180C for 4 minutes.

Place the depressed bread slice in the air fryer basket. Break the egg carefully on this cavity on the bread.

One slice of bread with a broken egg, salt and pepper on air fryer basket

Top with salt and pepper. Now air fry for about 6-8 minutes for the egg to be cooked and the bread to be toasted.

You do not need to use parchment paper for this recipe as the bread does not stick on the air fryer basket.

You can spray or brush some oil on the air fryer basket.

Again 6 minutes will be soft yolk and 8 minutes will be cooked yolk.Β

Take it out and enjoy your favourite breakfast.

One egg toast cut into half with yolk spilling out.

    Tips

    1. If using parchment paper, make sure that it is cut in such a way that it does not cover all of the air fryer basket. Leave some area for the circulation.Β
    2. Use of parchment paper or aluminium foil is needed if you are making a cavity in the bread slice.
    3. Buttering the slice is your choice. Your bread toast will be browner if you use butter.
    4. I have used egg at room temperature. If you are using yours straight from fridge your air frying time may be slightly higher.
    5. Remember that subsequent toasts may get done in slightly lesser time as the air fryer is now hot.
    6. You can use toppings like chilli flakes, bacon bits, chopped chives, parsley etc. as per choice.
    7. You can serve these air fryer egg toasts with air fryer vegetablesΒ andΒ breakfast potatoes.
