    This quick and easy air fryer mushrooms and onions recipe is a tasty side. It is a must try recipe and done in under 15 minutes.

    When air fried, onions get sauteed with crispy edges and mushrooms are cooked to perfection.

    You can try air fryer onion or air fryer garlic mushrooms too.

    Perfect for beginner cooks as well as anyone looking to rustle up something quick and tasty. This is a fuss-free recipe that needs only 5 ingredients.

    Best part is how versatile this recipe is. Feel free to use any seasoning of choice. 

    You can also add other vegetables like peppers, broccoli etc. that have similar air frying times.

    I just snack on it sometimes.

    Why You'll Love Air Fryer Mushrooms and Onions

    Quick and Easy: This recipe needs no prep and is done in under 15 minutes including air frying time.

    Healthy: I have used only 2 tsp. Oil in this recipe. It is low calorie and healthy.

    Side Dish: It is a side which pairs with about any protein.

    Flavorful: With just the basic seasonings, this is a flavourful dish.

    Beginner-Friendly: Perfect for new cooks or beginners, this recipe is really easy and kind of fail proof.

    Ingredients 

    Mushrooms: I have used 8 oz or 220 gm. button mushrooms here. 

    Onion: one large red or white onion is perfect for this recipe. It is sliced and used.

    Extra Virgin Olive Oil: I love its flavour, and it helps the mushrooms and onions from drying out.

    Seasonings: Salt, pepper and garlic powder are the basic seasoning used for this recipe.

    Variations and Substitutions

    Mushrooms: You can use baby bellas, portobello, cremini or button mushrooms here.

    Vegetables: Other vegetables like peppers, zucchini, asparagus can be added along with mushrooms and onions. Potatoes can also be added.

    Herbs: Add finely chopped cilantro or parsley for garnish at the end if you like.

    Spices: You can use any pre-made spice mixes like Old Bay seasoning, Cajun seasoning, BBQ seasoning mix here.

    Cheesy: Use nutritional yeast or cheese at the end for a cheesy touch.

    Oil: You can use coconut oil. Also, you can skip oil and use lemon juice in its place to help spices to adhere.

    Instructions 

    Clean mushrooms thoroughly by using a damp towel and wiping them.

    Cut them into halves or quarters (if they are large). I have used button mushrooms here.

    Don’t slice them because they shrink a lot after cooking and will become very tiny if sliced.

    Take one onion and slice it slightly thickly. This is so that it does not start burning in the time it takes to cook the mushroom.

    We want the onions to turn crispy around the edges.

    Assemble extra virgin olive oil, salt, pepper and garlic powder.

    Mix together chopped mushrooms and onion slices.

    Add oil and spices and ensure that everything is well coated.

    Spread them out in air fryer basket with minimal overlapping.

    For this recipe, I have not preheated the air fryer.

    Air fry at 200C or 390F for about 10-12 minutes till mushroom are cooked and onions are nicely roasted.

    Shake the basket midway for even cooking.

    Keep an eye on them after 10 minutes.

    The time may vary slightly depending upon the size of your chopped veggies and the model of your air fryer.

    Remove the air fryer basket and serve immediately.

    Expert Tips 

    Avoid overcrowding the air fryer to ensure even cooking.

    Make sure that mushrooms and onions are completely dry. This helps the spices to adhere well and for them to air fry perfectly.

    Cut mushrooms and onion in even size for uniform cooking.

    Adjust the time as per your air fryer model. It may only vary slightly.

    In case you are preheating air fryer, you can reduce the cooking time by 3 minutes.

    Serving Suggestions

    Side Dish: Serve them as a side along with protein like tofu, chicken or shrimp.

    Topping: They are a good topping in pizzas, omelettes, casseroles or soups.

    Pasta: You can serve them with agilo e olio.

    Bowl: Create a hearty bowl with cooked grain, salad, protein and these air fried mushroom and onions.

    FAQs

    1 What kind of mushrooms can I use for this recipe?

    You can use button, baby bellas, portobellos for this recipe. Cut them into even sizes.

    2 Why are my mushrooms and onions soggy?

    Ensure that you do not overcrowd the basket. The vegetables must be placed in a single layer with only minimal overlap.

    3. Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

    This is best served fresh. Though you can reheat precooked mushroom and onion and heat them through if stored in fridge after cooking.

    Storage Instructions

    You can store the leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for upto 3 days. 

    You can also freeze them after air frying and store in freezer for 2 months.
