Hasselback sweet potatoes in air fryer is one of those recipes that look like you have gone all out, but in reality, they are really easy to put together. The air fryer makes them even better. The slices crisp up on the edges while the insides stay buttery soft.
It is the kind of side dish that feels cozy and comforting but still has that "wow" factor when you bring it to the table. I like making these when I want to switch things up from the usual roasted or mashed potatoes.
They pair beautifully with any protein main or even just a big salad. And honestly, I have also eaten one straight out of the basket with a sprinkle of nutritional yeast and vegan butter on top, no regrets.

Ingredient Breakdown
Sweet Potatoes: Medium ones or smaller ones work best here, as they take lower time to cook and are also easier to slice through. I got a bag of small ones from Trader Joe's.
Olive Oil or Vegan butter: Both work beautifully. Vegan butter gives them a rich, indulgent flavour and is my favourite.
Seasonings: I like it simple with garlic powder, paprika, salt and pepper. I also used parsley flakes. They give the sweet potatoes a warm, savoury taste without overpowering them.

Instructions
Wash the sweet potatoes and dry them well. Since we are keeping them skin on, we want to get all grit off. Place each one between two chopsticks or wooden spoons and slice across at about ⅛-inch intervals, stopping before you cut all the way through. This creates the classic "hasselback" look.

In a small bowl, mix vegan butter with salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika and dried herbs. Brush this mixture all over the potatoes, making sure to get some in between the slices.

Preheat air fryer to 180C or 360F for 3 minutes. Place the sweet potatoes in the basket and cook for 15-20 minutes, brushing with more of the oil or vegan butter halfway through.
They are done when the edges are golden and crisp, and a fork slides in easily. You may need 5 minutes longer if your sweet potatoes are bigger.

Serve right away with your favourite mains or top with your favorite toppings. Enjoy hasselback sweet potatoes.

Variations
- Cheesy: Sprinkle some nutritional yeast in the final two minutes of the air frying time for a cheesy taste.
- Spicy: Add a pinch of chilli flakes or cayenne pepper to the seasoning mix for a bit of heat.
- Sweet: Brush the sweet potatoes with a little melted vegan butter and honey, then sprinkle with cinnamon instead of garlic and paprika. Perfect as a holiday side.
Expert Tips
- Use chopsticks as a guide while slicing so you don't cut through the sweet potato.
- Medium or small-sized sweet potatoes cook more evenly than large ones.
- Brushing the oil or butter in between the cuts halfway through cooking gives the best texture. Also when they are finished, brush some more for more taste.
- If you want them extra crispy cook for a couple of extra minutes at the end at 200C or 400F.
- Leftovers reheat well in the air fryer, just a few minutes at 180C and they're good to go.
