Ingredients
Lemon juice: Freshly squeezed lemon juice is what makes the lemonade. You can use lime juice as well.
Frozen or store bought lemon juice can also be used as long as it is not sweetened.
Brown Sugar: Brown sugar is used for a deeper colour and taste here.
You can use Indian jaggery too; the taste being slightly different.
Water or soda: Chilled water or soda is used along with ice cubes in this lemonade.
Instructions to Make Brown Sugar Lemonade
Start by juicing the lemons to get fresh lemon juice.
Roll the lemons gently on a countertop, applying slight pressure to release more juice.
You can also microwave them for about 10-15 seconds so that they give more juice on squeezing.
Use about 1 tbsp. lemon juice per glass. I have made two glasses of lemonade here.
Dissolve brown sugar in 1 cup or 250 ml. water. I used ¼ cup brown sugar for each glass of lemonade.
Brown sugar is less sweet as compared to regular sugar. So you may end up using more quantity.
I, however, prefer the lower sweetness of brown sugar.
Mix well till brown sugar dissolves completely. It takes a couple of minutes.
Pour the remaining water and lemon juice to make lemonade.
If using soda, add it just before serving.
Chill for at least an hour or use chilled water/soda while making this right away.
In a glass, add ice cubes, then top up with brown sugar lemonade and serve immediately.
You may reduce the quantity of water/soda slightly to allow for ice cubes to melt and not dilute the taste of the lemonade.
Your lemonade is now ready to serve. Garnish with lemon slices and mint.
Variations
1. Ginger and Mint Twist: For a zesty kick, add a few slices of fresh ginger and a handful of mint leaves to the pitcher.
Their flavor will infuse the lemonade giving it a refreshing undertone without being overpowering.
2. Berry Blast: Berries add a nice touch here.
Crush a handful of raspberries, strawberries, or blackberries and stir them into the lemonade for a fruity twist.
3. Iced Tea Lemonade: Add some black or green tea decoction for a tasty iced tea lemonade.
Serving Suggestions
Serve it chilled poured on ice cubes and garnished with lemon slices and mint.
Serve with a citrus rim: Before pouring the lemonade into glasses, rim the edges with a mixture of lemon zest and sugar.
This simple touch adds an extra burst of citrus aroma and visually elevates the drink.

Here's a fun twist on lemonade! Truly, summer's favorite drink. I'll be making this over the weekend. We use a lot of panela in my home, which is similar to jaggery, so I know it will be the perfect sweetener.
