Upside down Apple Tart with puff pastry are so delicious and easy to make. I think they were a viral TikTok trend some time back. I tried them with puff pastry sheet in air fryer, and they are yummy.

Perfect for when you are craving a fall dessert but are also watching the serving sizes. You can make the same in an oven too.

The recipe is so easy and can be replicated with any other fruit you like including pears, figs, banana, pineapple and so on.  I use only maple syrup and cinnamon with a dash of nutmeg for the recipe.

You can also make savory upside down tarts.

You will also love air fryer oreos, Paneer Puffs in Air fryer, Mushroom Puffs in Air fryer.

    Ingredients

Puff Pastry: I used 4 puff pastry squares. Or cut a sheet into rectangles.

Apple: I used half finely sliced apple here

Maple syrup: Use half to 1 tsp. maple syrup per puff pastry square

Cinnamon: I used a generous ½ tsp. per pastry square.

Nutmeg: Just added a little sprinkling to intensify the fall flavours.

Garnish: Sprinkle some powdered sugar on top (optional)

    Instructions

The recipe really is the easiest you can make. Finely slice the apples or you can chop them into small cubes as well. Keep aside. Assemble maple syrup, ground cinnamon and nutmeg. Thaw puff pastry sheet as per instructions on the pack.

It must be chilled and thawed. If it not, it will tear and not bake evenly. Then cut the sheet into equal sized rectangles and squares.

    Oven Instructions

Preheat the oven to 400F or 200°C. While it heats up, line a baking tray with parchment paper. Spoon ½ to 1 tsp. maple syrup for each puff pastry square. Carefully place sliced apple on top or apple cubes. Then top with some cinnamon and nutmeg.

Carefully take a puff pastry sheet and place on top of the apples. Using your fingers gently press down to remove any air. Then using a fork press down the sides.

Bake in oven at 400F or 200C for 8-10 minutes till the puff pastry is golden brown and puffed. Using a spatula flip the upside down apple tarts. They are ready to serve. Enjoy.

    Air fryer Instructions

Preheat air fryer to 400F or 200C for 4 minutes. Place a parchment paper sheet and assemble puff pastry upside down tarts.

Carefully place the parchment paper sheet with apple tarts in the air fryer basket.

Air fry at 400F or 200C for 4-6 minutes till the puff pastry is golden brown and nicely puffed.

Carefully flip the upside down apple tarts and remove them onto a plate. In case your tarts don’t look golden enough on the front side, then feel free to flip and air fryer for 2-3 minutes more at 400F or 200C.

Once golden brown, take them out and serve hot.Your crunchy and delicious treat is ready. Enjoy.

    Expert Tips

    1. I like using red apples as they are sweeter and one needs to use less of sweetener.

    2. Thaw the puff pastry correctly so that it is chilled while being completely thawed. That way it is easier to work with.

    3. Leave enough space between apple tarts so they can puff properly. In case they are not browned when you flip them, feel free to bake or air fry for a few minutes more till they are nice and golden brown in the front as well.

    4. Storage: These are best had fresh as the puff pastry loses its flakiness when stored. But you can still store in the fridge for upto 2 days in an air tight container. Bake or air fryer for a few minutes to heat through and make it crisp again before serving. Do not freeze.

    5. I love to have these upside down apple tarts as is, but you can serve with a nice scoop of nice cream too.

    6. You can use other fruits like pears, banana, peaches etc. in the recipe. You can also do a savory version with toppings of your choice.
