These turnip fries in air fryer are a great substitute for French fries. They taste good, are nutritionally better and are low carb. A great way to get your family to eat their veggies.

Turnips are regularly used in Indian cooking to make vegetable stir fry or shalgam ki sabzi and even turnip pickle.

But, when I tried out these fries, I was pleasantly surprised.

These fries are gluten-free and dairy free. I serve them with a spicy Sriracha dip. But you can also serve with any dip of your choice.

You may also like: air fryer butternut squash, air fryer sweet potato slices, homemade French fries in air fryer, air fryer sweet potato fries, air fryer baked sweet potato, air fryer beet chips, air fryer banana chips, air fryer parsnips.

Tips to Make the Perfect Turnip Fries in Air fryer

    1. Peel turnips and dry them. Cut into similar-sized fries and keep aside.

    2. I used cornstarch to coat them lightly. You can use rice flour for the same. Both of these help in making the fries crunchier.

    3. Turnips have a slight kick to their taste which I like. They do get sweeter when cooked and are a really interesting taste.

    4. Since turnips are low in starch and higher in water content, they do not get very crispy unlike potatoes.

So we use a bit of cornstarch to give them a crispy coating finish.

    5. You can use any spices you like to coat your turnip fries.

If you want them to be slightly sweet, you can use a tsp. of maple syrup when tossing them.

    6. Make sure that you shake the air fryer basket twice during the cook time to ensure that they cook evenly.

    Stepwise Pictures

Wash, peel and cut turnips into similar-sized french fries or sticks. Wipe them dry.

I cooked 1 lb. or 450 gm. at one go.

Now add 2 tsp. of olive oil to the turnip fries.

Add ½ tsp. cayenne or paprika, ½ tsp. pepper, ½ tsp. Himalayan pink salt, 1 tsp. Italian seasoning (optional) and ½ tsp. garlic powder to the fries.

Add 1 tbsp. rice flour or cornstarch and mix well so that it coats all the fries well.

Zero oil variation: Just skip the olive oil and use aquafaba or veggie broth to help the seasonings coat the fries.

    Baking Instructions

Preheat oven to 450F. Bake the fries for 20-25 minutes at 450F till crispy.

    Storage Instructions:

Turnip fries are best eaten hot off the air fryer. They don't keep very well and lose their crispness if kept outside.

    FAQs

    1. Are turnip fries bitter?

Turnips have a slightly bitter taste especially the older turnips. On cooking their bitterness reduces a lot and they turn sweeter.

    2. Is turnip good for keto?

Turnips are low in carbs and have a decent quantity of fiber making them very good for a keto diet.

    3. Can you freeze turnip fries?

Yes you can freeze turnip fries and then cook them straight in the air fryer or oven.

    4. Why are turnip fries soggy sometimes?

Don't overcook the fries or they get too soft and mushy. Let them have a slight bite to them.
