Breadcrumbs is something I use regularly. While store bought breadcrumbs are a good option for its convenience, it is not such a bad option to make them at home. I was pleasantly surprised with how crispy and well ground homemade breadcrumbs turn out in the air fryer.

I made this batch with whole wheat bread, but regular white bread works equally well. Let's dive into the process.

You may use these breadcrumbs for air fryer breaded cauliflower, air fryer breaded mushrooms, air fryer onion petals and air fryer shake and bake chicken.

Freshly prepared breadcrumbs in a bowl held up in a spoon

    Ingredients

Bread: I have used 6 slices bread for superfine 1.5 cups breadcrumbs. You can use gluten-free, white, whole wheat or multigrain.

    Variations and Substitutions

You can make breadcrumbs of your preference by varying the bread that you use. Works really great with older bread.

Feel free to add any seasonings that you like. I prefer to season the breadcrumbs as per the recipe hence I leave them unseasoned.

    Instructions

Prepare the bread. I just use day-old bread slices. I make small batches of breadcrumbs upto 1.5 cups and store the leftovers in the fridge.

You may remove the crust, but I leave it as is. Then I just cut the bread slices into cubes. Cutting them into equal sizes makes sure that they toast evenly.

That's it. I don't use any oil or seasonings. Preheat air fryer at 350F or 175C for 4 minutes.Lay bread cubes in one layer in the air fryer basket.

Air fry at 350F or 175C for about 6-8 minutes till the bread cubes are nicely toasted and golden brown.

You could do this step on a hot skillet too. Brush with oil and then toast on low heat. I like how uniformly toasted they are in air fryer.

Take out the toasted bread cubes. Let them cool down. Now pulse in your food processor or in a blender for breadcrumbs.

I made them finer but you can leave them coarser. Just blend them less or more accordingly. Your breadcrumbs are ready to use. Use them right away or store in an air tight container for upto a week in the fridge.

    Expert Tips

    1. Use a day-old or slightly stale bread for drier breadcrumbs.

    2. Blend the air fried bread cubes less for larger breadcrumbs and more for smaller sized ones.

    3. Leave the crust on. It really does not make much difference to the breadcrumbs.

    4. You can use white, multi grain, whole wheat or any kind of bread to prepare your breadcrumbs.

    5. Wait for the breadcrumbs to cool down completely before storing them.

    6. Make your own breadcrumbs and use them for breading as you like.
