This lemongrass ginger tea has a lovely lemony ginger fragrance and flavor. It is lovely for mood uplift, anxiety and cooling the body.

Lemongrass tea, just the name evokes a citrusy, fresh feel, doesn’t it? I only recently started making it, and I have to say that I love it immensely.

It is included in the arsenal of my tea recipes, and I make it regularly.

It helps that I grow lemongrass in pots at home hence have a steady supply of it. Else it can easily be bought at a store.

While you can just make this tea by steeping ginger and lemongrass in hot water and drinking it with or without a sweetener, I love to make it as Indian lemongrass chai.

Sage tea and Spruce tea are interesting variations you can try.

    Benefits of Lemongrass Tea

Lemongrass tea has immense health benefits.

    1. It is brimming with antioxidants (as per this study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry) and cooling energy which helps in boosting immunity.

    2. It is high in Vitamin A and Vitamin C making it useful during coughs and colds. It is also good for health of skin and hair.

    3. It is rich in Potassium and helps in regulating blood pressure.

    4. A study published in the Journal of Advanced Pharmaceutical Technology & ResearchTrusted Source showed that lemongrass oil extract helped to lower cholesterol in animals.

    5. It has polyphenols which may help in burning more calories and increasing metabolism.

    6. It also relieves bloating and is good to relieve premenstrual stress.

    Ingredients

    1. Lemongrass: I use both the leaves and the stalk (after lightly crushing). One lemongrass stalk is enough for about 3 cups of tea.

    2. Tea leaves: I use Indian Taj Mahal tea. Any tea that you like works.

    3. Milk: Plant based or dairy, use as per taste.

    4. Sweetener: I have used sugar here. But feel free to use maple syrup, brown sugar or even skip it.

    5. Ginger: Gives a lovely taste and aroma and adds to its health benefits.

    Variations and Substitutions

This lemongrass tea is a very easy and versatile recipe. You can only use lemongrass leaves and stalks and brew it in water for the most basic version.

Add a tea bag to it for a tea like taste. And finally go the whole way by making Indian lemongrass ginger chai that will take you to Indian homes with the rich citrusy flavorful tea.

Add or skip sweetener and milk (plant-based or dairy) as per taste.

You can add other spices like cardamom pods or Indian chai masala for an even more robust brewed tea.

    Serving Suggestions

    1. This lemongrass ginger tea is my favorite evening cup of tea. Have any snacks you may like with this tea like my favorite onion bhaji or roasted peanuts.

    2. You can just sip it as is whenever you want a slight lift to your energy and mood.

Instructions to Make Ginger Lemongrass Tea

    1. First and the simplest is that you take 2 cups of water. Boil it and add 1 lemongrass stalks with leaves chopped in it. Also 1 tsp. of grated ginger in the water.

Allow to steep for 10 minutes, and you will get a pale liquid. You can also boil it on low heat for about 5 minutes. Then strain out the liquid.

Your aromatic ginger lemongrass tea is ready. Add sweetener of choice or skip it and consume.

    2. Another way would be to add a tea bag when you will allow the lemongrass and ginger to steep.

Remove the tea bag when the liquid looks pale brown. Then continue to steep lemongrass.

Finally strain and add sweetener and consume your delicious lemongrass tea.

You can also try adding this jasmine syrup to the tea in place of honey.

    • You can add a dash of cinnamon powder if you like while brewing the tea.

I discovered lemon grass tea last year and I disliked it. But it grows on you if you keep trying at intervals. We make this at home mainly because my husband has benefited a lot from replacing the usual milk tea with lemongrass tea.

I cannot have milk in my tea or coffee, so I'm gonna skip the milk! I love lemongrass and its flavor is just amazing. I'd love to make the milkless version of it and try. I've heard it helps with sleep as well. An insomniac like me can do with it 🙂

Very nice, Rachna. I prefer it without the milk, but now that I've read your recipe, I will try the milk version. I don't take sugar though. Now, to source the lemongrass. I do have lemongrass teabags. 🙂 I really enjoy my afternoon cup of tea in different flavors!

I have never had lemon grass tea with the real stalks and leaves. Have had lemon grass tea bags. Will look out for lemon grass in the super market next time.

I also never tried lemongrass tea. I just got one stack to try this. Will this go along with elaichi and ginger tea Rachana? Or just lemongrass by itself?

        Thanks

Lemongrass by itself is pretty good. You can add elaichi too if you like or even ginger. I generally only do lemongrass by itself.

Hi Rachna, I have been using lemon grass for quite some time now but only the leaves.. does it benefit the same way as it would having not added a stalk to it?

Hi Allan, It is preferable to use both stalks and leaves for the health benefits. Sometimes I add lemongrass leaves just for a faint flavour and smell. 🙂

Thanks for the recipe. In fact it was the sight of the heroine in the movie"Thappad" making lemon grass tea morning after morning, that made me plant a Lemongrass clump in my kitchen garden. Now I make lemon grass tea frequently, but referred to your recipe to read about its health benefits. I boil a mixture of water and milk and add lemongrass to it before boiling. Tea bags/ leaves are added when it comes to a boil. The rest of the ingredients are added after straining. Well, thanks again!

Thank you for sharing your interesting anecdote. I remember those scenes in the movie Thappad. I first planted lemongrass in a pot at my home because I just loved using lemongrass in my Thai cooking. It is so fragrant and delicious. Then using it in tea was the next step. 🙂
