Crispy peas in air fryer are a surprisingly nice snack.

When I was munching on them, I realised that while some were delightfully crunchy, some others were crispy outside but not as crunchy inside.

I loved them both ways though.

Also they crisp up more when left outside, so that’s nice.

I was feeling lazy to thaw so I made these from frozen peas.

Did not dry out the peas too. Yet they crisped up well. What a delight!

But sure, make them from regular peas and the air frying time will be even lower.

You already know how much I love these chili lime pepitas, crispy air fryer chickpeas and crispy air fryer moong dal. Lentils and pulses turn out so well in the air fryer giving you the perfect snack.

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    1. Peas are healthy: Green peas are very low calorie and contain carbs, protein, fibre and important vitamins and minerals like Vitamin A, Vitamin K, Vitamin C, Iron, Manganese and so on.

Read more health information about green peas here.

    2. So quick and easy: It is a delicious snack to have at hand to munch around.

Takes less than 20 minutes to make and super easy recipe too.

    3. Adapt it to Your Taste: The recipe is just about mixing peas with some oil and spices and air frying.

    Add any seasonings you like.

    4. Barely any oil used: Air frying is perfect for crisping up foods while keeping oil use to the bare minimum.

These crispy peas use just 1 tsp. oil.

    5. Vegan and gluten free: Perfect snack for those who like dairy free and gluten free snacks.

    Ingredients

    1. Peas: I have used 1 cup frozen peas here. But, this recipe works perfectly with fresh peas too.

    2. Seasoning: I have used garlic powder, salt, pepper and paprika here.

    3. Olive oil: A tsp. Of olive oil is used here. But avocado oil works well too.

Ingredients for making crispy air fried peas: green peas, olive oil and seasonings.

    Variations and Substitutions

    1. Herbs: Dried herbs like oregano or dill taste good too.

    2. Experiment with Spices: For an Indian touch, you can use tangy chaat masala here.

Other spice mixes like fajita seasoning, peri peri seasoning, Ranch seasoning also work well.

    Serving Suggestions

    1. Snack: These crispy peas are a super tasty snack. Great for munching.

Do not need any dip or accompaniment.

    2. Crunchy salad toppers: Perfect to add a crunchy element to your salad.

    3. Snack mix: Mix them with other air fried lentils or nuts like these air fried peanuts or air fryer cashews for a delicious snack.

    Instructions

Take 1 cup peas. I used frozen ones here directly into the air fryer basket.

It took 5 minutes of air frying in a non preheated air fryer at 360F or 180C to thaw them out.

Frozen peas in an air fryer basket

In case you are using thawed or fresh green peas, you can skip this step.

If fresh, just dry them with paper towels and use them.

Now add ¼ tsp. Salt, ¼ tsp. Pepper and 1 tsp. olive oil and toss the peas with it.

thawed peas tossed with salt, pepper and olive oil.

Add them to preheated air fryer at 360F or 180C and air fry for 10 minutes.

Peas in air fryer for crisping up

It is important to keep shaking the basket once every couple of minutes.

    This ensures even cooking.

You will see that your peas start shrinking in size and may even look a little wrinkled.

I also noticed that as they got drier and crispier some peas exploded.

That is not a cause for worry.

After air frying, check how done they are.

If they are not crunchy enough, increase the temperature to 400F or 200C.

Then air fry for 2-5 minutes more.

You will have nice crispy peas ready to eat.

Be careful while taking them out as they will be very hot.

Now add the remaining spices and toss the air fried peas.

Air fried green peas tossed with the remaining spices.

Bring them down to room temperature if you are planning to store them.

They taste best when freshly air fried.

Also remember that they will continue to crisp up more when kept after air frying.

Enjoy your tasty crispy peas in air fryer.

    They are so delicious.

    Expert Tips

    1. Avoid overcrowding: Make sure that you do not put too many peas in at one time or they will not crisp up.

    2. Shake the basket: Frequent shaking will ensure that the peas cook and crisp up evenly.

    3. Adjust seasoning: Adjust seasonings as per taste. Spice it up by adding cayenne or you may use maple syrup for a sweeter taste.

    4. Storage: If you have leftovers, allow the peas to completely cool down. Then store in an air tight container.

You can crisp them up/reheat in the air fryer when eating.

    FAQs

    1. Can I use other peas?

You can use dried peas and soak them in water and use. But they do not give the same consistency.

You can use the same recipe with sugar peas or snap peas but readjust the time.

    2. How long to air fry frozen peas?

It takes about 15 minutes at 360F or 180C and a further 2-5 minutes to air fry frozen peas.

    3. Can I use dried green peas?

Yes, just ensure they are rehydrated first before following the recipe.

    4. How to make them crispy again?

A quick reheat in the air fryer for 2-3 minutes at 400F or 200°C should do the trick.

These crispy peas were the perfect topping for the chicken soup I made this week! I put a bowl on the table and you could sprinkle them in as you liked. The bowl of peas disappeared quickly! They added great texture to the soup.

I had never thought about air frying peas before, but I really like them. They were so nice and crunchy.
The next time I make them, I might sprinkle a little bit of wasabi powder over them.
