This wholewheat naan bread recipe is easy to make and uses no yeast. I have provided skillet and air fryer instructions.
Delicious hot garlic naan bread that is served in Indian restaurants along with curries is delectable and really takes food to the next level.
Somehow, we only have naans when eating out. But, it is super easy to make naans at home. Trust me, it is a real crowd pleaser.
Also using whole wheat flour makes it healthier. Quick recipe too.
Here is my whole wheat naan no yeast recipe:
Recipe:
Mix together whole wheat flour, processed flour, salt, sugar, minced garlic (optional) and baking powder in a shallow thali or plate.
Add ½ cup Greek yogurt (or thick Indian curd) and knead to a grainy mix. Now add the oil and knead further.
Using warm water little by little make a soft dough. Make a large ball of dough.
Brush with oil and cover with a damp napkin. Keep aside for 30 minutes.
After 30 minutes, gently knead the dough again for 30 seconds and form small balls.
You will get about 10 naans with this recipe.
With the help of a rolling pin, roll out each naan in a slightly oval shape about ⅛th inch thick.
You can use dry flour to prevent sticking of the dough while rolling.
Once rolled out, sprinkle some nigella seeds (if using) or minced garlic and press lightly with rolling pin.
For Skillet Cooking
Heat an iron skillet or tawa till medium hot. Apply water to one side of the rolled naan.
Lift it up gently and put in on the skillet with water side on the tawa.
It will instantly start puffing up. After about 30 seconds you can turn the skillet upside down and cook the other side directly on the flame till it gets brown spots.
You can also roll out the naan very thin like a roti. In this case cook one side on the tawa or pan.
Then turn the other side and cook cook the other side on direct flame like you do for roti.
Your naan is ready to serve. It is very soft.
Immediately brush with melted butter or olive oil (for vegan).
For Air fryer
Preheat Air fryer to 390 F or 200 C for 4 minutes.
Lightly brush the basket with oil or use parchment paper and lay the rolled out naan inside after spraying the top with melted butter or oil.
Cook for about 2-3 minutes till naan is puffed and golden.
Your air fryer garlic naan is ready to eat.
Take it out and brush with melted butter or olive oil (vegan). Serve hot.
You can also sprinkle some finely chopped cilantro and serve with the curry of your choice.
Easy peasy. Your wholewheat naan is ready. It tastes just like what you get in Indian restaurants.
Pro Tips:
You can use only processed flour too in the recipe but using whole wheat flour gives it more flavour.
You can use any garnish of your choice. If using garlic, you can add finely minced garlic after you have rolled out the naan.
While kneading the dough, use enough warm water not hot (about half cup) to knead a soft dough.
Iron skillets work the best. In case you are using non-stick tawa, use the second method of rolling out thinner naan and then cooking the second side like rotis on flame.
Air frying naan is also easy and supervision free.
