This sattu drink is a high energy and high protein drink. It is consumed in summers. It is delicious and nutritious.
Sattu or roasted gram flour is commonly used in Northern India particularly in states of Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh.
I distinctly remember how sattu was sold on roadside carts piled high with green chillies and onion.
This was commonly eaten by farm labourers and daily wage earners as a filling and nutritious meal.
It is consumed both as sharbat (or savoury or sweet drink) as well as in food items by making sattu ka paratha, litti chokha etc.

This is great Rachna! Just last week I picked up Sattu atta from my nearby grocery store because I've heard good things about it. Your recipe sounds just what my family will like. So easy, no sugar, tasty and best part good for health.
Rachna says
Oh absolutely. A super simple way of making it, Kala. Do try. I also like sattu parathas.
Shailaja Vishwanath says
I've had a version of this, I think, that mom used to make. Must try making it once and see how it compares with ragi malt.
Rachna says
It's similar to ragi malt but needs no cooking. Also there is no addition of buttermilk. Best part is no cooking is needed so it really is ready in 2 minutes. Do try.

I've been hearing a lot about the benefits of sattu and am pretty keen on trying it out.
Rachna says
No, it is not besan. Yes, that same one that we put in chutneys. You can use the whole roasted gram too. I just buy the Sattu from Big Basket. Do try. I enjoy its taste too.
