Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 lbs turnips peeled and sliced to ½ inch sticks or 450 gm.
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch or rice flour
  • 2 teaspoon olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon paprika or cayenne
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning optional

Instructions

  • Wash, peel and cut turnips into similar-sized fries or sticks. Wipe them dry. I cooked 1 lb. or 450 gm. at one go.
  • Now add 2 tsp. of olive oil to the turnip fries. Add ½ tsp. cayenne or paprika, ½ tsp. pepper, 1 tsp. Italian seasoning (optional), ½ tsp. Himalayan pink salt and ½ tsp. garlic powder to the fries.
  • Add 1 tbsp. rice flour or cornstarch and mix well so that it coats all the fries well.

Air Frying Instructions

  • Preheat air fryer at 180C or 360F for 5 minutes.
  • Add the marinated fries to the air fryer basket. Air fry at 180C or 360F for 10-12 minutes till turnip fries are crispy outside and well cooked inside.
  • Serve hot immediately with a dip of choice.

Baking Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 450F. Bake the fries for 20-25 minutes at 450F till crispy.

Storage Instructions:

  • Turnip fries are best eaten hot off the air fryer. They don't keep very well and lose their crispness if kept outside.

Notes

1. You can use rice flour in place of cornstarch. Both of these help in making the fries crunchier. Both are gluten free.
2. Turnips have a slight kick to their taste which I like. They do get sweeter when cooked and are a really interesting taste.
3. Since turnips are low in starch and higher in water content, they do not get very crispy unlike potatoes or sweet potatoes. So we use a bit of cornstarch to give them a crispy coating finish.
4. You can use any spices you like to coat your turnip fries. Even spices like Cajun spice, taco seasoning, fajita seasoning work well.
5. If you want them to be slightly sweet, you can use a tsp. of honey or maple syrup when tossing them.
6. Make sure that you shake the air fryer basket twice during the cook time to ensure that they cook evenly.
7. You can check out the stepwise pictures and video to understand better.
8. These fries are gluten free and dairy free as is. In case you want them to be no oil, just replace the oil with water or aquafaba or veggie broth to help coat the seasonings.
