Equipment

Ingredients

  • 12 dill pickles slices
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ tsp. onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup plant-based yogurt
  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs or regular breadcrumbs
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp. olive oil for brushing

Instructions

  • Drain the pickles. I have used dill pickles here but you can use any kind. Dry them using paper towers. Cut into thick, long slices.
  • Take plant-based yogurt in a shallow plate, add 1 cup all-purpose flour and mix well to form a slurry.
  • Take 1 cup breadcrumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, cayenne and salt in another bowl and mix well.
  • Dunk the pickles in the yogurt slurry to cover well. Then dip them in breadcrumbs mix and press to cover well. Keep aside.
  • Repeat for all the slices. Check out the stepwise pictures above.

Air frying Instructions

  • Preheat air fryer at 390F or 200C for 4 minutes.
  • Brush the basket with oil and lay the breaded pickle spears leaving some gap between individual spears. Air fry at 390F or 200C for about 10 minutes.
  • Midway, brush the pickles with oil and air fry more. This helps in giving a more fried appearance to the pickles while not loading them with too much oil.
  • Once done, they look golden and crunchy. Take out and serve hot.
  • Your air fried pickles are ready to eat. Enjoy.

Notes

1. Drain the pickles and dry them well. This helps the coating to adhere well.
2. Using panko breadcrumbs makes them crunchier but homemade breadcrumbs work very well too.
3. Brushing with oil during air frying helps them get a fried appearance and also gets them to taste better.
4. If you eat dairy, you can substitute plant-based yogurt with Greek yogurt.
5. I have used spears. You can easily do slices. They take lesser time to cook but fewer will fit at one go.
6. Change the spices or seasonings as per your choice.
7. Serve with dip of choice. I love ketchup, mayo, Chipotle mayo and Sriracha sauce.
