Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. shrimp or 450 gm. medium shrimp/prawn

For the breading

  • ¼ cup wholewheat flour
  • ½ cup buttermilk or milk or plant-based milk for dairy free
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs or Panko
  • ½ tsp. pepper
  • ½ tsp. cayenne or paprika
  • ½ tsp. pink salt or regular salt
  • ½ tsp. Italian seasoning optional

For Bang bang sauce

  • ½ cup mayo
  • ¼ cup Thai sweet chili sauce
  • 2 tbsp. Sriracha sauce

Instructions

  • Peel, devein and wash the shrimp. Dry them well.
  • Assemble 3 shallow bowls. Take ¼ cup wholewheat flour in one bowl, ½ cup milk or buttermilk in second bowl and 1 cup Panko or breadcrumbs with seasoning in third bowl. I use ½ tsp. pepper, ½ tsp. cayenne, ½ tsp. pink salt along with ½ tsp. Italian seasoning for the seasoning.
  • Preheat air fryer at 390F or 200C for 4 minutes.
  • Dip the shrimp in flour. Dust off the excess. Dip in buttermilk/milk. Then dunk in breadcrumb to cover completely. Keep aside.
  • Do one batch like this. I can fit about 15 medium shrimp in my air fryer in one batch. If you use large shrimp then you can fit about 9.
  • Brush air fryer basket with oil and lay the breaded shrimp in one layer in the basket so that there is gap between them.
  • Air fry at 390F or 200C for about 6-8 minutes for medium shrimp. They will get crunchy and golden brown on the outside and perfectly cooked inside. Make sure you don’t overcook because they continue to cook for a bit even after taking them out.
  • For larger or jumbo shrimp, you will need to cook for about 10 minutes at 390F or 200C in the preheated air fryer.
  • Please keep checking the time after 6 minutes because each air fryer is different.
  • Take out and serve hot with Bang bang sauce.

To Prepare Bang Bang sauce:

  • Mix together ½ cup mayo, ¼ cup Thai sweet chili sauce and 2 tbsp. Sriracha sauce. Mix well and your bang bang sauce is ready.
  • You can adjust the quantity of Sriracha sauce depending upon how much heat you like.

To Serve:

  • Serve Bang bang sauce as a dip on the side with shrimp. This is how I prefer to serve as I love to bite into the crunch of the air fried shrimp.
  • You can also toss the shrimp in the sauce and serve immediately.
  • Or you can drizzle the sauce on the air fried shrimp and serve immediately.

Notes

1. Choose good quality shrimp, fresh or frozen both work. If using frozen thaw before using.
2. I use wholewheat flour, buttermilk and breadcrumbs for the perfect crispy shrimp.
3. Always season your breadcrumbs for a good flavor.
4. You can use storebought bang bang sauce and make your own. It is super easy.
5. Serve it hot and crunchy. Or you can reheat for 1-2 minutes to restore the crunch. Make sure in this case your shrimp in not done completely so that it does not get overcooked while reheating.
6. I prefer to serve the sauce on the side to retain the crunch of the air fried shrimp. You can drizzle on the top or even toss in the sauce and serve depending upon your preference.
